Public Lecture featuring Ambassador Ronald Johnson

On Monday, Oct. 2, at 5 p.m. there will be a public lecture featuring U.S. Ambassador Ronald Johnson. Johnson has served the United States government for over five decades, first as an officer in the U.S. Army, and then as a member of the intelligence community. Johnson’s broad range of experience spans over five decades of government service in positions of increasing responsibility, with leadership and substantive engagement on a wide range of issues including diplomacy, national security, intelligence, counter-terrorism, insurgency, threat mitigation, conflict resolution and human rights. Serving as Ambassador to the Republic of El Salvador from 2019 to 2021, Ambassador Johnson’s previous experience and his personable “hands-on” style of diplomacy and statesmanship advanced U.S. national priorities in measurable and historic ways.   

This event will take place inside the Capers Hall auditorium and is free and open to the public.

Intersection of Law and Medicine: Current Issues for the Professions

As part of The Citadel’s pre-law society, Student Nursing Association, Pre-Health Society and the Alpha Epsilon Delta Honor Society, there will be a presentation by Mary Kay Schwemmer, registered nurse, attorney and the assistant vice president and chief counsel for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. This discussion will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 3, in Mark Clark Hall inside the Greater Issues Room.

Engineering Expo

The Citadel’s School of Engineering, in conjunction with The Citadel’s Career Center, is hosting their annual Engineering Expo on Tuesday, Oct. 3. This event will take place from 3 to 5:30 p.m. inside Buyer Auditorium, located on The Citadel’s campus. There will be 40 companies on campus discussing internship and job opportunities with cadets and students. Drop-ins are encouraged, and food will be provided.

The Wheel of Time: Books to Film

The Citadel will host an event titled “The Wheel of Time: Books to Film” on Tuesday, Oct. 3, at 6:30 p.m. Attendees will dive into the world that Robert Jordan – also known as James Rigney Jr., Citadel Class of 1974 – created with a closer look at “The Wheel of Time” television series. This in-person event promises to be a thrilling experience for fans, who will learn more about the author and series from special guest speakers including his widow and editor, Harriet McDougal, editor Maria Simons and series expert Michael Livingston, Ph.D.

This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required.

Applied Physics Experience for high school students

The Citadel’s Department of Physics will host an Applied Physics Experience for high school students on Saturday, Oct. 7.

The event offers students the opportunity to have fun learning about applied physics, collaborating with Citadel faculty and cadets, make engaging devices, learn how they work, and also learn more about the cadet experience from physics majors.

Recent event projects include discovering the physics of string shooters, biologically inspired light seeking robots, microphone sensor system, sound activated LEDs, DIY metal detector and mechanical laser light show.

The registration fee is $35, and it covers all supplies, snacks and lunch.

Ready, Set, Hire!

The Citadel Career Center will host their event — Ready, Set, Hire! — on Wednesday, Oct. 11, from 1 to 4 p.m. inside the Daniel Library. The event will include a resume and cover letter review station, elevator pitch practice station, LinkedIn profile review station, professional interactions station with Tesla employees and a professional headshot photo station. This event is free and is open to all Citadel cadets and students.

3rd Annual Citadel vs. VMI Army ROTC Competition

The 3rd Annual Citadel vs. VMI Army ROTC Competition will take place on Saturday, Oct. 14. This event is an annual challenge between the ROTC programs at VMI and The Citadel, featuring a mix of military and non-military events that challenge cadets and highlight features from each school’s program. Cadets will conduct a series of events on Saturday morning, including PT, obstacle course and knowledge quizzes.

The competition will begin at 7 a.m. and will conclude by 12 p.m. At halftime during The Citadel vs. VMI football game, the winners will be announced during an awards ceremony.

Seven Tools for a Useful Life: Featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger

World-famous as a bodybuilder, movie star and the former governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has dedicated much of his life to political reform and climate activism. He is the author of the upcoming book “BE USEFUL: Seven Tools for Life,” inspired by his father’s words. On Tuesday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. Schwarzenegger will join The Citadel virtually for this live-streamed event. This event is free and open to the public.

Class of 1979 Leadership Day

On Wednesday, Oct. 19, regularly scheduled classes are replaced with a Leadership Day training, seminar or service project for all cadets. The cadets will engage in service activities at more than 20 locations in the Lowcountry, such as leading classroom activities and cleaning up parks. They will also attend seminars on leadership and civic learning.

On average, more than 8,000 hours of service to the Lowcountry are provided by the cadets each Leadership Day, and more than 20,000 annually. The Krause Center for Leadership and Ethics sponsors the event.

A nearly $1 million donation from the alumni class permanently endowed the Class of 1979 Leadership Day.

Women’s Leadership Workshop – Unlocking Your Potential: Leveraging Strengths for Leadership and Career Success

The Executive Leadership Academy at The Citadel is hosting a one-day workshop on Thursday, Oct. 19, at 9 a.m. The guest speaker will be the director of The Citadel’s Career Center, Jen Santoro Cleveland. In this workshop, attendees will analyze results from the Top5 Clifton Strengths test and the Myers Briggs Temperament Indicator to increase attendees’ levels of self-awareness and focus on the strengths brought to their work. Attendees will engage in case studies, experiential learning, active discussion and personal reflection while networking and developing relationships with others. They will also leave the session with the knowledge and tools to help themselves and others use their strengths to thrive in their professional and personal lives.

Supply Chain Career Fair

The Citadel’s Career Center is hosting their Supply Chain Career Fair on Thursday, Oct. 19. This event will take place from 3 to 5:30 p.m. inside the Bastin Hall Atrium, located on The Citadel’s campus. Around 25 companies from supply chain sectors will visit campus to speak with Citadel cadets and students regarding full time job and internship opportunities.

On Thursday, Oct. 19, at 5 p.m. there will be a public lecture featuring Jimmy Story, who served as the Ambassador for the Venezuela Affairs Unit. Story has also served in Sao Paulo as the Deputy Principal Officer and Political-Economic Chief; Brasilia as the Regional Environmental Affairs Director for South America; Washington D.C. in the Office of Marine Conservation in the OES Bureau; Maputo Mozambique as Economic-Political officer; Guadalajara, Mexico as a Consular Officer; and at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations as the Ambassador’s staff assistant.

This event will take place inside the Capers Hall auditorium and is free and open to the public.

Sales, Marketing and Business Administration Career Fair

The Citadel’s Career Center is hosting their Sales, Marketing and Business Administration Career Fair on Thursday, Oct. 26. This event will take place from 3 to 5:30 p.m. inside the Bastin Hall Atrium, located on The Citadel’s campus. There will be around 20 companies on campus from sales, marketing and business administration sectors speaking with Citadel cadets and students regarding full time job and internship opportunities.

27th Annual Meeting of the Southeast Early China Roundtable

From Friday, Oct. 27 to Sunday, Oct. 29, The Citadel’s History Department, the Johnson Endowment and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, as well as the College of Charleston’s History Department and Asian Studies Program will be hosting the 27th Annual Meeting of the Southeast Early China Roundtable.

The event will begin on Friday, Oct. 27, with the conference’s keynote lecture by Brian Lander of Brown University. He will deliver a presentation entitled “Life in the Flood Zone: The Early Environmental History of the Yangtze River Lowlands.” The lecture will take place at The College of Charleston at 5:30 p.m. in the Robert Scott Small Hall Room 235. 

On Saturday, Oct. 28, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 29, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. the meeting will take place in Capers Hall, Room 1039.

The Southeast Early China Roundtable is an association of scholars from the United States’ south Atlantic region who specialize in or maintain an interest in China’s history from its Neolithic beginnings to the year 1000 C.E.  The purpose of the group is two-fold: it provides a specialist forum in which all aspects of China’s early history and culture can be examined, and through its keynote address promotes knowledge of China’s formative beginnings to non-specialists.

South Carolina VBOC Boots 2 Business Reboot at The Citadel

The SC VBOC, or South Carolina Veterans Business Outreach Center, at The Citadel will host an in-person course in the Tommy and Victoria Baker School of Business. This event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 28, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.

2023 South Carolina Junior Academy of Science (SCJAS) Fall Workshop

The Citadel will host the 2023 South Carolina Junior Academy of Science (SCJAS) Fall Workshop on Saturday, Oct. 28. This annual workshop will enable South Carolina high school students and teachers to participate in a full day of hands-on, science-focused activities. There will be 13 workshop sessions in the STEM fields and the fields of nursing and finance, taught by several Citadel professors as well as College of Charleston professors.

Public Lecture: “How China’s Early Empires Transformed the Environment”

On Monday, Oct. 30, at 6:45 p.m. inside the Capers Hall Auditorium, there will be a public lecture given by Brian Lander. Lander is Brown University’s Stanley J. Bernstein assistant professor of History and Environment and Society. His book “The King’s Harvest: A Political Ecology of China from the First Farmers to the First Emperor” won the American Historical Association’s 2022 James Henry Breasted Prize for the best book in English in any field of history prior to CE 1000.

This event is free and open to the public.

Join The Citadel’s SALSA (Student Association of Latin and Spanish Awareness) Club and Sigma Delta Pi as they celebrate ancestors and loved ones for Día de los Muertos. This event will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 31, in Capers Hall Room 1039 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The SALSA Club and Sigma Delta Pi will be crafting altars and skulls. This event is free and open to the public.
