The first woman to graduate from The Citadel walked the stage to accept her diploma for a master’s degree, 50 years ago, on May 29, 1970.

The Citadel is proud to recognize five employees from Information Technology Services as the Team of the Year and Henry Bouton as the Employee of the Year.

Soon-to-be-officers joined a Zoom meeting where they practiced the ceremony. Each name was called, cadets gave their salutes remotely.

She’s been through eight commandants and 35 regimental commanders. Two of her four sons are graduates. One grandson is a graduate, and in 2021, another grandson will graduate.

The Tailor Shop would normally be busy right now with uniform needs for commencement. But with cadets away, the staff made a new way to help their community.

The Citadel employs more than 1,000 people, plus contract employees like Iris Hamilton-Seabrook, who works for the company that provides custodial services.

Normally, during finals, cadets can soothe their study jitters by playing with dogs brought to campus for the Daniel Library’s Doggy Day.

The Citadel has its Army cadets take the oath of office together, going one-by-one to state their name, then repeating the rest of the oath in unison.

Though the ingredients may not align with today’s nutrition guidelines, the chocolaty sweets were a welcome addition to meals in the mess “back in the day.”
