The Citadel Graduate College is holding their fall open house on Wednesday, Nov. 1, from 3 to 7:30 p.m. inside Bastin Hall. The Citadel Graduate College offers 25 graduate degree programs with more than 15 concentration options, nine graduate certificate programs and 12 college transfer programs. During this event, attendees will have the opportunity to meet with program faculty, the admissions team and staff from various student services offices.

The Citadel Veteran Business Outreach Center: VetCert Webinar with Debbie Petitpan

The SC VBOC, or South Carolina Veterans Business Outreach Center, at The Citadel will host an online webinar for veterans, their spouses and National Guard personnel. This webinar will introduce attendees to the requirements for, and the process of, registering a business as a Veteran Owned Small Business.

West Chair Public Lecture featuring Daniel Hoffman

On Wednesday, Nov. 1, former CIA official and current FOX News contributor Daniel Hoffman will be on campus at 5 p.m. as part of the West Chair Speaker series. This event is free and open to the public and will take place in the Riverview Room on campus. Hoffman is a retired clandestine services officer and former Chief of Station with the CIA. His combined 30 years of government service included high-level overseas and domestic positions at the CIA. Hoffman has been a FOX News contributor since 2018.

Homecoming 2023 at The Citadel will be held Friday, Nov. 3, through Sunday, Nov. 5. This year, homecoming will honor the classes that end in ‘3 and ‘8.

The weekend welcoming graduates of The Citadel back to their alma mater is one of the biggest events of the year on campus.

Notable events include: the Twilight Parade and Homecoming Review parade on Summerall Field, open barracks for parents and guests, a performance by the Summerall Guard and a flyby, sponsored by the Air Force ROTC, during the Bulldogs football game against Mercer.

2023 Senior Military College and Service Academy Warrior Week DeepRacer Tournament

Wednesday, Nov. 8
3 – 6 p.m.

On Wednesday, Nov. 8, The Citadel will host an autonomous racing competition held each year by Amazon Web Service, or AWS.

With AWS DeepRacer, developers of all skills can get hands-on, machine learning through a cloud-based 3D racing simulator. Each team programs a fully autonomous, 1/18th scale race car which is driven by reinforcement learning. Whichever team’s self-driven car completes a lap the fastest wins.

During the November competition on campus, cadets from The Citadel will go against cadets from both West Point and the U.S. Naval Academy.

International Games Day

The Daniel Library will celebrate International Games Day on Wednesday, Nov. 8.

Library staff will provide a variety of games for cadets, students, faculty and staff, though players are also welcome to bring their own games.

Gaming experts will also be available to introduce attendees to new games and teach them how to play.

Baker Business Bowl X: Elevator Pitch round

Thursday, Nov. 9

Ten teams — made up of Citadel cadets and students — will compete for a place in the finals of the Baker Business Bowl X. To get into the finals, those teams must make it through the Elevator Pitch round, which will be held on Thursday, Nov. 9, starting at 3 p.m.

This semi-final round consists of a five-minute summary presentation, where teams explain their potential business ideas to a panel of business experts. After the brief presentation, the judges will hold a ten-minute question and answer session with each team.

The Baker Business Bowl is a program aimed at helping budding entrepreneurs who have an idea for a new product or service and the desire to turn that idea into a business. The winning team is awarded $10,000 to help make their proposed business a reality. The competition is open to all Citadel cadets and students.

Leverett Lecture hosted by the Department of Psychology

The Citadel’s Department of Psychology will host a Leverett Lecture on Thursday. Nov. 9, titled “Understanding the mental health crisis among students in higher education,” which will be delivered by guest lecturer Michael Hawes, Ph.D. Hawes serves as the President and CEO of the Foundation for Educational Exchange between Canada and the United States and is the Executive Director of Fulbright Canada.

Hawes will present a special lecture on understanding the mental health crisis among students in higher education. While the presentation will address various coping strategies for college-age students, it will focus on the more significant questions about belonging, connectedness and confidence building and on how transformative experiences like study abroad have played an essential role in reducing stress and anxiety and allowing students to imagine a world with greater possibilities.

Each year The Department of Psychology invites a guest speaker to give the Leverett Lecture and opens the event to all faculty, staff, students and the community.

J. Patrick Leverett, Ph.D., served as a faculty member in The Citadel’s Department of Psychology for ten years. In July 2005, Leverett died tragically in a plane crash in Alaska. Upon his death, this annual event was created in his honor and to commemorate his many contributions to The Citadel.

Summerall Guard Veterans Day Performance

As part of Patriots Point Veterans Day events, The Citadel’s Summerall Guard will perform their silent precision drill on the flight deck of the U.S.S. Yorktown on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 12 p.m. The cost of the event is included in admission price. To purchase tickets, click here.

Known around the United States as one of the elite military drill troupes, membership is a high honor at the military college of South Carolina. Created in 1932, the Summerall Guards have represented The Citadel at events around the nation, including performing in five presidential inaugural parades.

The platoon is named for Gen. Charles P. Summerall, former Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army and The Citadel president from 1931 until 1953. Its purpose is to exemplify the exactness and thoroughness of a cadet’s training through a unique series of movements based on old, close-order Prussian drills. The maneuvers have never been written down, are passed from class to class and are performed to a silent count.

The Sound of Freedom: Charleston Symphony Orchestra Salute to Veterans

The Citadel is holding a Veterans Day concert with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, or CSO, on Saturday, Nov. 11. The event begins at 7 p.m., where attendees can meet and greet the CSO musicians, and the concert will begin at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $40 for general admission. All proceeds will support art programs for Citadel veterans in partnership with The Citadel’s Veteran Student Success Center. For more information and to buy tickets, click here.

While at this event, attendees can view the current exhibit at the Winfred B. Moore Jr., Art Gallery in Capers Hall, “Behind the Lines: Combat Artists and The Citadel Experience”.

West Chair Public Lecture featuring Dan Richard

On Monday, Nov. 13, Dan Richard, the CIA’s Associate Deputy of Digital Innovation will come to campus as part of the West Chair Speaker Series. This event will take place at 11 a.m. in the Capers Hall auditorium. Before accepting his current job, Richard served in other roles in the CIA such as Chief of Cyber Intelligence and Policy, Chief of Staff to the Director of the CIA and Deputy General Counsel. This event is free and open to the public.

Women’s Leadership Workshop: Conflict Management and Effective Feedback

The Executive Leadership Academy at The Citadel is holding a one-day workshop on Tuesday, Nov. 14, beginning at 9 a.m. The guest speaker will be Tracey Sigler, Ph.D., department head of Leadership Studies at The Citadel. In this workshop, attendees will identify their preferred method of conflict management and learn how to choose the most effective way to handle a conflict situation. Attendees will learn how to create a safe and trusting environment while managing the emotions that can arise in potentially charged situations.

This event is also an opportunity to meet those who care for the collections and to learn more about the work being done to preserve, share and research Citadel history.

2023 Candlelight Service

The Summerall Chapel’s 2023 Christmas Candlelight Services will be held on Friday, Dec. 1, through Sunday, Dec. 3, at 7:30 p.m.

Poinsettias are available for purchase for $15 each in memory or in honor of a loved one. The poinsettias will be used each night of the Christmas Candlelight Service and they may be picked up on Monday, Dec. 4. Anyone who would like to purchase poinsettias should contact the Chapel Operational Manager, Geri Jones, at (843) 953-5049.

Students and their families are invited to come to The Citadel on Saturday, Dec. 2 for coding tutorials and treats including cookies, cocoa and coffee.

This event is free and open to students in grades K-12 and aims to provide students with hands-on computing opportunities. Students will use Code.org’s tutorials in order to practice computer science concepts and skills.

Parents will need to complete a permission form for their child upon arrival.
