As The Citadel begins a new academic year, President Gen. Frank McKenzie, USMC (Ret.), ’79, is the subject of a profile that appeared on the front page of The Post and Courier.
Gen. McKenzie returned to The Citadel as its 21st president on July 1, nearly 50 years after he first arrived on campus as a cadet in the summer of 1975. His return followed a 42-year career in the Marine Corps, culminating in his service as commander of U.S. Central Command.
The Post and Courier called it the “General’s homecoming.”
In its Aug. 26 edition, The Post and Courier published an article exploring McKenzie’s return to his alma mater, his vision for The Citadel and how his experiences at the college and throughout his career have shaped his leadership.
The Post and Courier writes:
Gen. Kenneth “Frank” McKenzie Jr. is quick to point out that the successes he experienced in some of the nation’s highest military command positions can be traced back to the education he gained as a young man at The Citadel.
He graduated from the Charleston military college nearly five decades ago and now has made the roundtrip back to his alma mater to take the helm as president. That comes after a storied career making priority decisions on how to execute national security missions, bolster the country’s defenses and pen a book about his career.
“The Citadel has been very important to me,” he said. “This opportunity came open and I couldn’t say no to it.”
