The 8th Annual Gold Star Journal Academic Conference

The 8th Annual Gold Star Journal Academic Conference will take place on Tuesday, April 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. inside the Capers Hall auditorium.

The Gold Star Journal is The Citadel’s premier scholarly publication. This year’s edition features seven cross-disciplinary scholarly papers and twelve creative works from the school’s very best undergraduate and graduate students.

The evening will commence with hors d’oeuvres followed by presentations by the authors of The 2024 Gold Star Journal. While this event is not open to the public, the media is invited to attend.

Finance Speaker Series

On Tuesday, April 2, at 5:30 p.m., the Tommy and Victoria Baker School of Business will host their biannual finance speaker series. The featured speaker will be Scott Bessent, CEO and founder of Key Square Group. Bessent serves as the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer for Key Square Group, a Greenwich, Charleston and London based partnership founded in 2015. He has been a well-known investor in the macro space for more than three decades.

This event is free and open to Citadel students as well as the media.  

Academic Excellence Day

Each spring at The Citadel, top cadets and students share their research at the annual Academic Excellence Day.

This year’s event will be held in-person in the Deas Hall gymnasium on Friday, April 5, from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m.

Cadets and students will be presenting posters that represent the research they’ve conducted over the past year. Ninety student posters will be on display, representing scholarly work from a wide variety of disciplines.

Final round of Baker Business Bowl

Wednesday, April 10
3 – 6:30 p.m.
Bastin Hall Room 104, The Citadel campus

The final round of the Baker Business Bowl will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10.

During the final round, those teams will present a full business plan for their idea — including marketing, pricing and production strategies, detailed financial projections and other relevant business details — to a judging committee, who will decide the first and second place winner.

The first place prize is $10,000, meant to help them start their business; the second-place team will receive $5,000.

The five teams that made it to the finals are:

  • Baffling Solutions — This company will produces a trailer-moving robot named Argo. They aim to make moving trailers safe and convenient, with a durable and easy-to-maintain product.
  • Oasis Verde — Oasis Verde hopes to beis more than a business; it’s also a heartfelt commitment to transforming urban landscapes into vibrant, sustainable havens. By integrating innovative technologies with a deep passion for environmental stewardship, Oasis Verde strives to create communities where nature thrives, and people flourish in harmony with the planet.
  • Passive Dredging Solutions — Passive Dredging Solutions plans to safeguards healthy waterways and thriving marinas by providing innovative, efficient, scalable and long-term alternatives to traditional sediment removal solutions. We They want to empower marina and dock maintainers to preserve the optimal water depth for their locations, protect aquatic ecosystems and ensure seamless boating experiences for the foreseeable future.
  • Reddere — Reddere is a mobile app designed to serve as a community service “hub” for high school and college students, offering a user-friendly interface similar to popular social networking apps. By simplifying the process of finding and participating in community service, Reddere aims to attract students seeking opportunities to give back, assisting with college applications, or aspiring to lead service events.
  • Tsuboi Agriculture LLC — Tsuboi Agriculture LLC is a locally branded company that will cultivates Australian Red Claw Crayfish in large aquaculture conditions. It hopes to provides high -end seafood restaurants and consumers with a cost- efficient, sustainable, better tasting and continuous supply of lobster-like products.

The Baker Business Bowl is a program aimed at helping budding entrepreneurs who have an idea for a new product or service and the desire to turn that idea into a business. The competition is open to cadets, evening undergraduate students and graduate students. This year is the tenth year of the Baker Business Bowl.

The Citadel Class of 2028: Accepted Student Day

The Citadel will host Accepted Student Day on Saturday, April 13. It will give those accepted to The Citadel for fall 2024 a chance to further explore the opportunities they will have as a cadet.

The goal of Accepted Student Day is to help prospective cadets understand what cadet life is like.

Visitors will have a chance to connect with future classmates, learn more about their major, watch a physical training demonstration, learn about different ways to pay for college, eat lunch in the mess hall and more.

13th Annual Henry Dale Smith Public Speaking Competition

The 13th annual Henry Dale Smith Public Speaking Competition will be held on Tuesday, April 16, from 3 to 5 p.m. in Bastin Hall.

Public speaking continually ranks as one of the most sought-after skills in leadership, and The Henry Dale Smith Public Speaking Competition highlights The Citadel’s unique student body by bringing the most passionate, intellectual and ambitious leaders to the stage for a chance to win money and recognition.

The first, second and third place winners receive cash prizes of $500, $250 and $100, respectively. The first place winner also receives “The Citadel’s Most Celebrated Speaker” award prior to Commencement.

There are seats open to the public but must be reserved in advance by emailing sfourney@citadel.edu.

Inn of Court Spring Reading

On Tuesday, April 16, The Citadel Inn of Court will host a keynote speaker for their annual meeting of Inner and Outer Barristers. The keynote speaker will be South Carolina Attorney General and Murdaugh Prosecutor Alan Wilson. While this event is open to the public, cameras are not permitted. There will be a $25 registration fee at the door, though Citadel cadets will get in for free. Please email pmoring@citadel.edu to reserve a seat.

The Citadel Graduate College Spring open house

The Citadel Graduate College will host an open house on Wednesday, April 17, from 3:30 to 7 p.m. in Capers Hall. The CGC offers 25 graduate degree programs with over 15 concentration options, over 10 graduate certificate programs and 12 college transfer programs. All the programs are designed for adaptability and offer a quality education tailored around your profession, family and lifestyle.

Attendees will have the opportunity to meet with program faculty, admissions and staff from campus student services offices including Financial Aid, Student Success Center, Veteran Student Success Center, The Daniel Library, Career Services and many more across campus.

This program has an open format — attendees are welcome to join for any portion.

The Tommy and Victoria Baker School of Business will host The Citadel Directors’ Institute – a one-day program designed for public and private company corporate directors and their executives – on Friday, April 19.

The CDI will help attendees connect and engage in an active dialogue focused on strategic planning, risk, board governance and other issues faced by business leaders.

The opening keynote speaker is D. Cameron Findlay, retired general counsel of Archer Daniels Midland Company, Medtronic and Aon. The luncheon keynote speaker is Col. Tom Gordon, Commandant of Cadets at The Citadel.

CDI 2024 also includes an opening reception on Thursday, April 18, from 5:30 – 7 p.m. The full program begins the following day and concludes that afternoon with a closing reception.

Veterans Business Outreach Center Networking Panel Discussion

To celebrate the Small Business Association’s Small Business Week, the South Carolina Veterans Business Outreach Center will host a panel and networking mixer from 5:30 – 7:30 on Tuesday, April 30. The event will feature specialists in small business-supporting industries. Specialists at the panel will be from the industries of banking, real estate, accounting, insurance agencies and law offices.
