The Citadel Board of Visitors elects Dr. Triz Smith as vice chair

Dr. Triz Smith, '98 The Citadel Board of Visitors

The newest vice chair for The Citadel Board of Visitors began his term on Oct. 17.

The BOV elected Col. Triz Smith, M.D., ’98, to a two-year term as vice chair during a June 7 meeting.

Smith is an obstetrician-gynecologist (OBGYN) in Sumter, South Carolina, who serves or has served as a leader for numerous organizations. He first joined the BOV in January 2022.

“I appreciate the confidence and trust the Board has placed in me to serve as vice chair,” said Smith. “I will work diligently with the administration and alumni to ensure our school is able to produce principled leaders in a traditional environment.”

Smith holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from The Citadel and a Doctor of Medicine, earned in 2003, from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine; he completed his postdoctoral training in OBGYN with the Medical University of South Carolina from 2003 – 2007.

Smith is engaged in numerous professional societies including the South Atlantic OBGYN Society, the South Carolina OBGYN Society, the South Carolina Medical Association and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, or ACOG. Additionally, Smith is a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Commission, The Citadel Brigadier Foundation and a lifetime member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

Smith replaces Colonel F.G. “Greg” Delleney, Jr. as the gubernatorially appointed BOV member. Delleney still serves on the board, but is doing so now as one of the seven members elected by the South Carolina General Assembly. Three BOV members are elected by alumni.

Smith replaces Col. Peter M. McCoy Sr., ’74, as vice chair. McCoy first joined the BOV in 2012, and he has volunteered in support of his alma mater for years in a variety of capacities. Professionally, McCoy was a 35-year employee with Sonoco Products Company before his retirement. Sonoco Products Company is a global packaging solutions business headquartered in Hartsville, South Carolina.

Col. F. G. “Greg” Delleney Jr., ’74, currently serves as chair after being elected in 2023. Delleney, who joined the BOV in 2019, has been a partner of Hamilton, Delleney, Grier & Cotten, LLC in Chester, South Carolina since 1988. After serving in the Navy from 1974-1977, he retired from the US Naval Reserves as a Commander in 1995. He was an elected member of the South Carolina House of Representatives, District 43, from 1991 – 2018, including having served as Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. Delleney graduated from Erskine Theological Seminary in 2022.

The Citadel BOV has 14 voting members. Ex-officio members include the governor, the adjutant general and the state superintendent of education; the other 11 members are graduates of The Citadel. Members serve six-year terms. There is no limit to the number of terms that a board member may serve and no age limit. Board members have the honorary rank of colonel in the Unorganized Militia of South Carolina. (If members have earned a higher rank in U.S. military service, they may retain that rank.)
