High school seniors and juniors interested in attending The Citadel have two remaining opportunities this semester for an overnight, in-person visit.

Beginning with registration at 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 2, students will get to spend a night in the barracks and eat in the mess hall. On Friday, March 3, parents and students will attend information sessions; they will be able to have their questions about The Citadel answered by a panel of cadets and members of the faculty and staff.

These visits are designed to offer a comprehensive overview of life at The Citadel. Students and parents will be able to learn about academic programs, ROTC opportunities, cadet life, financial aid, student support services and more.

Final round of Baker Business Bowl IX

The final round of the Baker Business Bowl IX will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 8.

Five groups of Citadel cadets and students have been working on a business idea that could turn into a $10,000 check and a future career.

During the final round, those teams will present a full business plan for their idea — including marketing, pricing and production strategies, detailed financial projections and other relevant business details — to a judging committee, who will decide the first and second place winner.

The first place prize is $10,000, meant to help them start their business; the second-place team will receive $5,000. The prize money is made possible by The Citadel Class of 1989.

The five teams that made it to the finals are:

• BreaKINGchains/Worthy Living Co. — This company is a personalized life and accountability coaching service that specializes in nutrition support through delivered meal boxes to promote weight loss. They aim to develop this business into more fitness and incentive focused plans.
• FarmHand — This team’s goal is to help eliminate food deserts through micro-green, aquaponics, vertical farm franchising systems. This will be done by partnering with homeowners to use their homes’ space to install these aquaponic systems.
• Landsformer — This team wants to develop a solar–powered, self-driving lawn mower. Made up of mechanical engineer majors, the team aims to develop a more cost-effective version that utilizes solar-powered batteries and a boundary system.
• Patriot Goalie — This company hopes to create handcrafted, quality hockey equipment, specifically for youth goalies. Youth hockey is a growing sport, and since children grow quickly out of their gear, this company aims to cut the cost of replacing goalie gear by creating sizeable pad leaf inserts.
• Sideways Performance — The Sideways Performance team aims to improve the performance and efficiency of any vehicle by replacing older motors with fuel injected LS motors. This will save vehicle owners money by improving gas mileage on older vehicles, as well as boosting its reliability and power.

The Baker Business Bowl is a program aimed at helping budding entrepreneurs who have an idea for a new product or service, and the desire to turn that idea into a business. The competition is open to cadets, evening undergraduate students and graduate students.

2023 IEEE Razor Lecture

The Citadel’s student branch of the IEEE, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, will host a joint lecture with the Coastal Carolina Section of the IEEE on Wednesday, March 8 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The 2023 Razor Lecture is named after Charles Thurston Razor, the first head of The Citadel’s electrical engineering department. This year’s speaker will be Troy Follak, ’91, chief engineer for Boom Supersonic.

2023 Black Alumni Collective Symposium

On Friday, March 10, The Citadel will host the 2023 Black Alumni Collective Symposium at Johnson Hagood Stadium. The day will start with a breakfast and welcome remarks from The Citadel President Gen. Glenn Walters, USMC (Ret.), ’79. The first session of the day will focus on Black alumni leadership development and succession planning, followed by a session on recruitment, retention, graduation and bridging to alumni career paths. The last session of the day will be leadership working groups, wrapping up with a photoshoot at Summerall Chapel and a Citadel African American Alumni reception at Bastin Hall atrium.

Global Business Knowledge workshop

The Citadel’s Tommy and Victoria Baker School of Business is hosting a one-day workshop to raise awareness of global business management, global marketing, supply chain management and trade finance. The workshop will help participants prepare for the CGBP, Certified Global Business Professional, national board exam and will be provided a box lunch.

Citadel History: Women’s Leadership Panel

The Citadel Academy of Science and Mathematics annual awards banquet

The Swain Family School of Science and Mathematics is hosting its Annual Citadel Academy of Science and Mathematics Awards Banquet on March 23 at Trident Technical College. The banquet honors the academic accomplishments of exceptional cadets and students, outstanding faculty and distinguished alumni.

A highlight of each year’s event is the pre-dinner reception, when up to 40 cadets and students present their research posters. Guests are encouraged to mingle and engage with the students and their faculty advisors to discuss what the students are learning in the classroom and the laboratory.

Corps Day and Recognition Day

Recognition Day, which will be held during the last weekend of March, is when knobs are officially recognized as members of the Corps of Cadets after months of rigorous training exercises.

That process begins with what is known as The Gauntlet and culminates with a march to Marion Square and the iconic Freshmen Oath Renewal Ceremony. It is one of the most important events in a cadet career.

Recognition Day is a momentous occasion in the life of a knob. It means the end of rigid formations, walking in single file at breakneck speed and the highly regimented way of life that is The Citadel’s fourth-class system.

Corps Day, the birthday of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets and one of the most highly attended weekends at The Citadel, will also be celebrated that weekend. Attractions include dress parades, awards presentations, special cadet performances and athletic events.

34^th Annual The Citadel Brigadier Foundation Auction

The 34^th annual The Citadel Brigadier Foundation Auction will take place on Saturday, March 25 at the Charleston Gaillard Center from 5:30 until 11 p.m. The TCBF auction is the largest annual fundraising event for The Citadel Brigadier Foundation and is open to all alumni, friends and family of The Citadel. All proceeds from the auction go directly towards funding the nearly five million annual scholarship cost for more than 350 cadet-athletes.

Ticket prices vary and raffle tickets are available for those who can’t attend the event in-person. There will be a silent and live auction, heavy hors d’oeuvres, premium cocktails and a dueling pianos performance.

The history of women at The Citadel

Semester-long donation drives for those in need

The Citadel’s Clinical Counseling Program’s Diversity Initiative donation drive

The Clinical Counseling Program’s Diversity initiative, headlined by Bernetha Davis and Nicole Thompson, is collecting monetary and physical items to create homeless/poverty kits. These items will be collected throughout the months of January through May. Members from the Psychology Department will meet at the end of the fundraiser to put the kits together. The kits will be distributed to local homeless shelters. PayPal or cash donations are also accepted.

Items needed for each kit include:

• Toiletries (Toothbrush/paste, soap, dry shampoo, etc.)
• Rain poncho
• Lightly used blankets
• 2 pairs of socks
• Face masks
• Nonperishables 
• Beanie
• Scarf

The Citadel’s Multicultural Counseling course donation drive

The Citadel’s Multicultural Counseling course is collecting monetary and physical donations for Florence Crittenton, as well as creating care packages to distribute to the homeless population in the area.
