2023 Corps Day parade

The Palmetto Battalion is holding an ROTC Open House on Saturday, April 1 at The Citadel. Those interested in attending can meet recent Palmetto Battalion comissionees who can answer questions about the program and the opportunities in the Army, as well as talk to recruiters about enlistment opportunities for all branches. Members of the Army Workhorse Battalion will be operating the Army Special Forces Trailer that will feature parachuting, helicopter, support fires and terrain simulators. All are welcome to learn about what the military can do and to see what special forces soldiers do.

SC Science Olympiad

On Saturday, April 1, The Citadel will hold the SC Science Olympiad. The Olympiad offers interscholastic academic competition in biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, problem-solving and technology. The state tournament will consist of a series of individual and team events. 

The Citadel will host 15 high school teams that will be bringing and testing their own designed antenna device. Greggory Mazzaro, Ph.D., professor in the department of electrical and computer engineering at The Citadel, will test students on the principles of electromagnetic wave propagation. Antenna testing will be done by Citadel professor Sylmarie Dávila-Montero, Ph.D., along with several Citadel students using custom made testing equipment.

CyRF@C: Cybersecurity Research Forum at The Citadel

The Citadel Department of Defense (DoD) Cyber Institute will host a cybersecurity research forum on campus from April 3 to April 4. The Citadel will host all six senior military colleges for the event, with each college presenting their own cyber focused research. The cyber focused research papers, posters and presentations will be reviewed during the event with winners in each category being selected at the end of this two-day conference.

This is a collaborative effort between higher-education institutions dedicated to advancing cybersecurity research and to developing prolonged research opportunities to undergraduate students.

Presentation on analyst jobs in financial companies

The Citadel’s Department of Mathematical Sciences will welcome Dr. Jozsef Bukszar to campus on Tuesday, April 4, where he will give a presentation on analyst jobs in financial companies, as well as data analytics and data science.

Bukszar will attempt to cover a significant part of analyst jobs in the financial sector andgive insights into what analysts in the particular roles do, how they work together in the organization, what skills are important in particular roles and what students can do to prepare themselves for these roles.

This event will be in-person, although seats are limited. The presentation will also be available to watch over Zoom at this link.

The 7th Annual Gold Star Journal Academic Conference

Celebrate The Gold Star Journal’s 27th anniversary at The Gold Star Journal Academic Conference on Thursday, April 6. There will be presentations from the authors of the 2023 Gold Star Journal. The conference will conclude with a presentation of certificates and awards. Free copies of this year’s edition will be available.

The Gold Star Journal is The Citadel’s premier scholarly publication, which features cross-disciplinary nonfiction papers written by both undergraduate and graduate students. This year’s edition features seven cross-disciplinary papers, one photo story, twenty-nine photographs, two drawings and two paintings created by Citadel undergraduate and graduate students.

ROTC Awards Ceremony

The Citadel ROTC departments provide cadets with officer training during college to allow them to begin their military careers as officers after graduation. Through the departments, which include Army ROTC, Air Force/Space Force ROTC, Marine Corps ROTC and Navy ROTC, The Citadel is one of the nation’s proven producers of top military leaders.

Annually, the departments nominate their finest cadets and active duty students for awards. This year, more than 100 award recipients will be honored in a ceremony on Thursday, April 7, in McAlister Field House.

The awards being presented recognize qualities that range from displaying the traits and characteristics of service through demonstrating the ability to solve problems outside the box.

Academic Excellence Day

Each spring at The Citadel, top cadets and students share their research at the annual Academic Excellence Day.

This year’s event will be held in-person in the Deas Hall gymnasium on Friday, April 7, from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m.

Cadets and students will be presenting posters that represent the research they’ve conducted over the past year. 81 student posters will be on display, representing scholarly work from a wide variety of disciplines, including engineering, sciences, humanities and fine arts.

An Evening with Nathaniel Philbrick

New York Times bestseller Nathaniel Philbrick will hold an evening lecture and book signing event on Tuesday, April 11 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Holliday Alumni Center. The event will begin with a moderated conversation at 5 p.m. with David Preston, Ph.D., General Mark W. Clark Distinguished Chair of History and director of The Citadel M.A. in Military History. This will be followed by an audience Q&A at 6 p.m. and will end with a book signing at 6:30 p.m.

Philbrick is the author of many bestsellers, such as “In the Heart of the Sea,” “Mayflower” and “Travels with George: In Search of Washington and His Legacy.” His work has earned him the National Book Award and finalist for the Pulitzer’s Prize. Philbrick’s writing has appeared in Vanity Fair, The New York Times Book Review, The Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times and The Boston Globe. He has appeared on the Today Show, the Morning Show, Dateline, PBS’s American Experience, C-SPAN and NPR.

The Citadel Graduate College and College Transfer Program Spring Open House

The Citadel Graduate College and College Transfer Program is hosting an open house on Wednesday, April 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. in Buyer Auditorium, located in Mark Clark Hall. The CGC offers graduate and transfer programs in various fields through online and evening classes to accommodate working professionals.

The open house gives perspective students a chance to learn about the more than 70 non-cadet programs offered by The Citadel, a chance to meet experienced Citadel faculty who are at the top of their disciplines and meet outstanding support staff who service all student’s needs, whether they are on campus or online.

This is an open format event and food will be provided.

Nuclear Networking

The Citadel’s Career Center will hold a Nuclear Networking event on Wednesday, April 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. inside Bastin Hall atrium. This event will have multiple nuclear companies onsite such as Duke Power, Westinghouse, Savannah River Nuclear, Department of Energy and Department of Health and Environmental Control. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

Hall of Fame hosted by the Tommy and Victoria Baker School of Business

The Citadel’s Baker School of Business Hall of Fame will recognize individuals who are leaders in their respective fields. This year’s Hall of Fame event will take place Thursday, April 13, with a reception at 6 p.m. followed by a dinner and awards program at 7 p.m. The event, held every other year, honors and thanks the recipients for their contributions to the business community.

The Citadel Chinese Program and Chinese Club: Guest lecture on China’s student movement

The Citadel’s Chinese Program and Chinese Club will have Yidi Wu, Ph.D., on campus to speak on China’s student movements on Thursday, April 13, from 7 to 8 p.m. Wu is an assistant professor of history at Elon University. This lecture will include remarks on student activism, social movements and higher education in China. This event is free and open to the public.

Free, open to high school juniors and seniors interested in joining the Corps of Cadets

High school seniors and juniors interested in attending The Citadel have one remaining opportunity this semester for an overnight, in-person visit.

Beginning with registration at 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 13, students will get to spend a night in the barracks and eat in the mess hall. On Friday, April 14, parents and students will attend information sessions; they will be able to have their questions about The Citadel answered by a panel of cadets and members of the faculty and staff.

These visits are designed to offer a comprehensive overview of life at The Citadel. Students and parents will be able to learn about academic programs, ROTC opportunities, cadet life, financial aid, student support services and more.

Citadel Electrical Engineering Design Symposium Presentations

Graduating seniors from The Citadel’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering will present their capstone projects at The Citadel Electrical Engineering Design Symposium (CEEDS) on Wednesday, April 19, from 5:15 to 8 p.m.

As part of each cadet’s yearlong, required capstone design courses, teams of four to five students have been working since September on electronics & programming projects which represent the culmination of their electrical and computer engineering education at The Citadel. This will include 15-minute presentations to summarize their work, from initial proposal through design and results of their testing. 

These presentations are open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

Student projects include: floor-pressure-sensor-based medical-assistance system, flood-monitoring-and-alert system, small-scale magnetic-levitation train, environmental-monitoring rocket payload, semi-autonomous person-following shopping cart and drone-based wireless-network-gap-repair system.

82nd Airborne Blackhawks on campus

Wednesday, April 19

On Wednesday, April 19, The Citadel community and guests will have an opportunity to see Black Hawk helicopters land on campus.

Three UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters, piloted by Citadel alumni, will land on Summerall Field. Cadets, students and visitors will get a chance to see the helicopters up close. In addition to the static display, there will be aviation career discussions and Army recruiting.

Academy of Engineers 2023 Induction

The Citadel Academy of Engineers honors engineering leaders from both the public and private sectors who have enjoyed substantial success in their professional lives and made significant contributions to their communities. On Thursday, April 20, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The Citadel Academy of Engineers will induct their 2023 honorees. This event will take place at the Holliday Alumni Center.

All inductees have lived a life consistent with The Citadel School of Engineering vision, which is to educate and innovate engineers that impact the world through principled leadership. Each inductee incorporates The Citadel’s core values of honor, duty and respect by building the reputation of engineering education excellence, modeling responsibility for student centered success and giving mutual respect in inclusion of all Citadel students.

Accepted Student Day

The Citadel will host Accepted Student Day on Saturday, April 22. It will give students, accepted to The Citadel for fall 2023, a chance to further explore the opportunities they will have when they attend.

The goal of Accepted Student Day is to help prospective cadets, students and veteran students understand what life at The Citadel is like.

Visitors will have a chance to connect with future classmates, learn more about their major, watch a physical training demonstration, learn about different ways to pay for college, eat lunch in the mess hall and more.

Bulldog Challenge

The Citadel Bulldog Challenge is a unique, nationally known endurance race that borrows from all facets of the U.S. Marine Corps ROTC training exercises. The race stretches from The Citadel campus all the way down to the MUSC parking garage and the sand volleyball courts. Teams of competitors cross obstacles like tire flips, a simulated casualty evacuation, a mud pit and much more.

The race, organized by the Semper Fi Society at The Citadel, gives active duty service members, ROTC units from across the country, first responders, cadets, students and anyone else the chance to come together for a friendly but grueling competition. Funds raised by the Bulldog Challenge support annual scholarships for cadets or active duty Marines within the college’s Naval ROTC Unit, as well as funding time-honored traditions like Mess Night and the Marine Corps Birthday Ball.

This is the third year runners have the option to run the race with a two-person team, as well as the traditional four-person team.

Physical item drop off: Bond Hall Room 164, The Citadel Campus

The Clinical Counseling Programs Diversity initiative, headlined by Bernetha Davis and Nicole Thompson, is collecting monetary and physical items to create homeless/poverty kits. These items will be collected throughout the months of January through May. Members from the Psychology Department will meet at the end of the fundraiser to put the kits together. The kits will be distributed to local homeless shelters. PayPal or cash donations are also accepted.

Items needed for each kit include:

  • Toiletries (Toothbrush/paste, soap, dry shampoo, etc.)
  • Rain poncho
  • Lightly used blankets
  • 2 pairs of socks
  • Face masks
  • Nonperishables 
  • Beanie
  • Scarf
  • Lightly used clothes (Shirts, Pants, Dresses, Jackets, etc.)
