As cadets and students begin receiving refunds in their accounts related to the COVID-19 campus closure, The Citadel Department of Financial Services wanted to share some information to help answer questions that may arise.

Will I get a refund for room, board and parking fees for the time I am not on campus?

Yes, cadets’ accounts will be credited a prorated amount of the original auxiliary charge based on the number of days the cadet is no longer utilizing the campus’ auxiliary services. Beginning with the date the Corps would have returned from Spring Break, this is a total of 47 days.

For Room and Board, the total credit is $1,608.81.
For Cadet parking, the total credit is $147.42.

The fundamental principle that The Citadel will follow is that we do not expect cadets and students to pay for services not rendered. At the direction of Governor McMaster, we are working closely with the Commission on Higher Education and all the other state higher education institutions to develop a methodology for fair treatment of every student in South Carolina who paid fees for this academic year for services they will not receive. The governor laid out specific due dates for this process and targeted May 1st for a report on the implementation of financial relief to students. We understand that a lot of families are going to experience financial duress during these challenging times, so we will do anything we can to expedite this matter. We will keep cadets, students and families apprised of our progress in providing relief.

How was the amount determined?

When and how will I get the refund?

Credits will first be applied to any outstanding charges on the student’s account. Refunds will be processed over the next two weeks. Students that have already signed up for Direct Deposit will receive their refunds first. If no Direct Deposit record exists, the refund will be mailed out as paper check to the home address on file.

I am a Citadel Graduate College student. Will I get a refund?

CGC students with an active parking pass before Spring Break will receive a $20 credit for unused parking.

Will this affect my financial aid?

Students on full scholarship may not receive a refund. Your scholarship will be reduced by the same amount as the cost for room and board is reduced. If you paid for parking you will receive the refund amount prorated for parking.

Will students be refunded for graduation fees, leadership laboratory fees, room and board, academic lab fees, transportation fees and the meal plan cost?

The governor’s office has charged the Commission on Higher Education with determining the refunds that colleges and universities are to provide. We will process those returns when we receive guidance from CHE.

How do graduating seniors go about retrieving the rest of the money left in their one card account?

Graduating cadets will receive a refund for any remaining funds on their OneCard following graduation; returning cadets’ balances will carry over until next year, in accordance with standard procedure.
