Citadel professor to serve as next Inspector General for the U.S. Department of Defense

After years of teaching law to the next generation of principled leaders, Citadel professor Platte Moring has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the next Inspector General for the Department of Defense.

In his new role, Moring will oversee accountability and integrity across the nation’s largest federal agency.

Moring was confirmed on Thursday, Dec. 18, after his nomination was received by the Senate in June of the same year.

When Moring testified before the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee in September, some of his then-current students were in the audience alongside three graduates who were involved with Inn of Court, The Citadel’s pre-law society, while they were cadets.

“My approach to fulfilling the Inspector General’s mission of promoting economy, efficiency and effectiveness in the Department will be to painstakingly pursue the facts of each matter with the intent of achieving justice and accountability,” Moring said.

A distinguished legal and military professional, Moring brings a wealth of experience to the position. He is a retired Lieutenant Colonel from the Pennsylvania Army National Guard and a recipient of the Bronze Star. Prior to joining The Citadel in 2021, he served in various roles across the Executive Branch, Judicial Branch, private law, the military and higher education. In fact, the primary focus of his legal work in private practice and at the Department of Justice was the investigation and prosecution of fraud.

“Lt. Col. Moring’s nomination to the office of Inspector General overseeing the Pentagon is a high honor,” said Cadet Noah Miller, Regimental Academic Officer and one of the cadets who attending his hearing. “I personally witnessed his commitment to teaching, encouraging and showing cadets hands-on leadership experiences. Lt. Col. Moring has been a great asset to The Citadel, and we are better for having him at our institution as he models exemplary leadership in service to our nation.”

At The Citadel, Moring has taught political science while continuing to guide cadets through issues of law, governance and national security as well as serving as faculty advisor to The Citadel Inn of Court. Moring also served as the coach for The Citadel Mock Trial team.

“The motto of The Citadel is ‘honor, duty and respect,'” said Moring. “I will continue to uphold these core values as the Inspector General,” said Moring.
