The South Carolina Corps of Cadets commencement exercises will celebrate the graduating members of the Class of 2017.
This year’s speaker at the cadet graduation ceremony is the world-class opera singer and Citadel alumnus, Morris Robinson. After graduating from the college in 1991 where he played football and sang in the choir, Robinson went on to enter the world of opera after leaving the corporate world. He later attended the Choral Arts Society of Washington and the Opera Institute at Boston University. An acclaimed vocalist, Robinson now performs internationally.
Tickets are required for all guests in McAlister Field House. A livestream broadcast location will be available in Grimsley Hall Auditorium (no. 15 on the college’s virtual map) for guest overflow and attendees who do not have tickets. The Citadel Graduate College commencement exercises will celebrate graduate, evening undergraduate and veteran students of the Class of 2017.
This year’s speaker at the graduate college ceremony is Tommy Baker. A Charleston native, Baker attended The Citadel as a veteran student after returning from service as an enlisted Marine. He is the founder and owner of Baker Motor Company. In 2017, Baker gifted The Citadel with its largest cash donation ever made to the college’s business program. As a result, the business program at The Citadel is now named The Tommy and Victoria Baker School of Business. Veterans who attend The Citadel have a significant advantage over students at other institutions because of the Baker Veterans Fellows Program.

Theaters of the American Revolution
Recently released
David Preston, Ph.D., an award-winning history professor at The Citadel, recently released his latest work, Theaters of the American Revolution.
Taking a new approach to the military history of the Revolutionary War, a team of distinguished war historians wrote the collection of essays by examining the dynamics of the regional theaters of the conflict, rather than focusing on specific battles.
The Citadel’s Revolutionary War Symposium held last spring facilitated the collaboration of Preston and his co-editor James Kirby Martin, professor of history at the University of Houston. Fellow symposium contributors also served as essayists in the book: Edward Lengel, chief historian of the White House Historical Association; Charles Neimeyer, director and chief of Marine Corps history at Marine Corps University; Emeritus Professor Mark Edward Lender of Kean University; and Jim Piecuch, history professor at Kennesaw State University.
Preston is currently the Westvaco professor of national security studies at The Citadel. He has also written other works such as The Texture of Contact and Braddock’s Defeat. His latest work is now available for purchase online through Westholme Publishing.
STEAM Camps 2017

The Citadel is offering Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) camps June 6-23 for children entering fifth through eighth grades. The camps will focus on a different STEAM-related topic each week, such as intelligence, science, and coding.
Students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills used by the intelligence community. In addition, they will learn the science, engineering and technology that make modern sports a league of their own as well as the basics of block-based coding languages and how it applies to fashion, gaming and agriculture industries. Camp themes are as follows:
- Tuesday, June 6 – Friday, June 9 – Intelligence Intrigue
- Monday, June 12 – Friday, June 16 – Sports Science
- Monday, June 19 – Friday, June 23 – Coding Challenge
Citadel faculty, staff, cadets and volunteers will staff the all-day camps. Multi-week and multi-child discounts are available as well as a limited number of fee waivers for students in Title I schools. Registration closes April 30, 2017, or when the camps reach capacity. This 45-hour institute will enhance the teaching of AP chemistry through in-person and online instruction. The participant will be responsible for housing and meals. For those needing overnight accommodations, dorm rooms at the College of Charleston will be available for approximately $60 a night. Meet David L. Preston, Ph.D., Westvaco professor of national security studies at The Citadel and historian. Preston’s interests include US military history and the French and Indian War. An acclaimed writer, Preston has won numerous awards for his work such as the PROSE Award in US History, the Distinguished Book Award and the Gilder-Lehrman Prize in Military History.
Preston received his bachelor’s degree from Mary Washington College and his master’s and doctoral degrees from the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va.
