The Citadel’s first major event in 2024 will be the return of the Corps of Cadets to campus.
Having left for the winter furlough, cadets will return to campus on Sunday, Jan. 7. Throughout the reconstitution process, the Corps will return to the college’s 24/7 military lifestyle in preparation for the spring semester.

West Chair Public Lecture featuring Raj Parekh

On Thursday, Jan. 11, Raj Parekh, the First Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, will come to campus as part of the West Chair Speaker Series. This event will take place at 5 p.m. in the Capers Hall auditorium. Parekh’s discussion will focus on prosecuting terrorism cases. He leads a staff of more than 300 federal prosecutors, civil litigators and support personnel in a district that serves over six million residents. This event is free and open to the public.
Martin Luther King Day of Service and Parade

On Monday, Jan. 15, the Krause Center for Leadership and Ethics — with sponsorship from The Citadel African American Alumni Association (CA4) — will honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The event will begin at 8 a.m. in the Holliday Alumni Center, where breakfast will be served to the attending cadets, students, faculty, staff and members of the CA4. RSVP is required to attend the breakfast, click here to attend.
Beginning at 8:30 a.m., attendees will hear from guest speakers before the parade, which will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Johnson Hagood Stadium and will end at 11:30 a.m. at the South Carolina Aquarium. For more information on the parade, click here.
After the parade, Citadel cadets will volunteer for service projects with Hope to Home Furniture Resource, Charles Towne Landing and Sweetgrass Gardens.
The MLK Day of Service is a national effort to use the holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. into a day of community service. It was created by Congress in 1994 through the King Holiday and Service Act.
Presentation and book signing for James Lechner’s “With My Shield: An Army Ranger in Somalia”

On Tuesday, Jan. 16, The Citadel will hold a presentation and book signing from 6:30 until 8 p.m. inside the Capers Hall auditorium. James Lechner’s book “With My Shield: An Army Ranger in Somalia” tells the inside story of an Army Ranger, surrounded and outnumbered, fighting a desperate action on the ground during the Black Hawk Down raid in Somalia in 1993.
This first-hand account tells the story of how these elite warriors were able to stand together and prevail against incredible odds. Lechner gives the reader the perspective of an Army Ranger fighting on the ground, combined with professional military analysis, in a groundbreaking book that tells the complete story with never-before-revealed details.
This event is free and open to the public.

The Citadel’s Inn of Court, the pre-law society on campus, will hold a presentation by Mac Heavener, the Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Tennessee. The presentation will be held on Thursday, Jan. 18, at 6 p.m. inside the Legal Studies classroom in Capers Hall, which is Room 2135. This event is free and open to the public.

Free, open to high school juniors and seniors interested in joining the Corps of Cadets
High school seniors and juniors interested in attending The Citadel have the opportunity for an overnight, in-person visit.
Beginning with registration at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 18, students will get to spend a night in the barracks and eat in the mess hall. On Friday, Jan. 19, parents and students will attend information sessions; they will be able to have their questions about The Citadel answered by a panel of cadets and members of the faculty and staff.
These visits are designed to offer a comprehensive overview of life at The Citadel. Students and parents will be able to learn about academic programs, ROTC opportunities, cadet life, financial aid, student support services and more.

The Citadel will hold its first military dress parade of the year on Friday, Jan. 19, at 3:45 p.m.
The tradition of parading troops can be traced back to the time of Alexander the Great, and the South Carolina Corps of Cadets’ Friday afternoon dress parades reflect those drill procedures and movements of the past.
Modern day dress parades are conducted to inspect troops, render honors, preserve tradition and foster espirit de corps. At various times throughout the year, parades are also used to present awards and recognize students, faculty, staff and other notable figures.

President’s List and gold star parade

The second military dress parade of the year will honor those cadets and students who were named to the President’s List or who earned gold stars for superior academic performance during the fall 2023 semester.
The President’s List is one of the most distinguished cadet awards presented by The Citadel. It indicates excellence in academics and military duties.
Gold stars are awarded to cadets and students who have earned a grade point ratio of 3.7 or higher.

Virtual fair for The Citadel’s School Psychology program

The Citadel’s School Psychology Ed.S. program will host a virtual fair on Monday, Jan. 22, at 6 p.m. This event is ideal for current undergraduate students as well as community members who are interested in a career in school psychology. Attendees will learn about the roles of a school psychologist, as well as more about The Citadel’s School Psychology graduate program. The Citadel Career Center will host their event — Ready, Set, Hire! — on Monday, Jan. 29, from 1 to 4 p.m. inside the Daniel Library. The event will include a resume and cover letter review station, elevator pitch practice station, LinkedIn profile review station, a professional interactions station and a professional headshot photo station. This event is free and is open to all Citadel cadets and students.

This event is free and open to the media.
