On Friday, Jan. 31, the South Carolina Corps of Cadets’ dress parade will recognize African American graduates from the Class of 1975, and African American female graduates from the Classes of 2005. The Citadel will also pay tribute to 16 African American cadet alumni who have passed. This parade is the first event for the college’s annual recognition of Black History Month.
Parade begins at 3:45 p.m. on Summerall Field.
The Citadel Judo Club college scrimmage

The inaugural Citadel Judo collegiate scrimmage will take place on Saturday, Feb. 1, from 9 to 11:20 a.m. The Citadel Judo Club will host the University of Florida Judo Club and University of North Carolina Chapel-Hill for this scrimmage.
Judo is a Japanese sport that emphasizes skill and strategy in overcoming an opponent. Judo skills include throws, or takedowns, pins and submissions in a safe and controlled environment. This event is free and open to the public.
Mock Trial competition

The Citadel Mock Trial team will compete against the College of Charleston on Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 6 p.m. This event will take place inside the mock trial classroom located in Capers Hall and is free and open to the public.
There will be three attorneys and three student witnesses from each school, and the competition will be a three-hour long mock trial.
Black History Month Bazaar hosted by The Citadel’s African American Society

Join The Citadel’s African American Society as it hosts its annual Black History Month Bazaar on Tuesday, Feb. 6 from 12 – 4 p.m. in Buyer Auditorium. This event will feature a taste of soul food curated by local Black-owned restaurants, the Sankofa African American Museum on Wheels and live music by the Urban Roots Band.

One of the largest STEM events in the Lowcountry will take place at The Citadel on Saturday, Feb. 8. Storm The Citadel will involve teams of K-12 students traveling to campus to compete in various science, math and engineering challenges include launching hand-made trebuchets (medieval-style catapults), firing water bottle rockets, testing miniature bridges and competing with Lego robots.
Through Storm The Citadel, the college’s STEM Center of Excellence – along with the School of Engineering, the Zucker Family School of Education and the Swain Family School of Science and Mathematics – promote STEM education and allows students to use the skills they learn in the classroom in tangible, exciting ways.
The event draws hundreds of students, teachers, coaches, parents and spectators each year.
Meet the Bulldogs

The Citadel baseball team will host “Meet the Bulldogs” at Joe Riley Park on Sunday, Feb. 9. The event is free and open to the public. Kids will have an opportunity to meet coaches and players, receive free posters for autographs and watch the baseball team’s last scrimmage before the season starts.
Gates will open at 11 a.m. From 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., The Citadel baseball team will take batting practice on the field, and from 12 to 1 p.m. will hold a meet and greet with fans on the field. Afterwards, there will be a 7-inning scrimmage from 1 to 3 p.m.

Building the Black Cities: A History of African Americans and Labor

Following the 2025 National Black History Month theme “African Americans and Labor,” The Citadel’s Office of Multicultural Student Services will host Joe William Trotter Jr., Ph.D., on Tuesday, Feb. 11, in Capers Hall Auditorium at 6:30 p.m. Trotter is the Giant Eagle University Professor of History and Social Justice at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburg, PA. His talk will focus on the historical efforts of African Americans to create economic agency for themselves through various types of work. The program will conclude with a brief Q&A.
In addition to teaching at CMU, Trotter is the author of several books and publications including “Workers on Arrival: Black Labor in the Making of America” (University of California Press) and “African American Workers and the Appalachian Coal Industry” (West Virginia University Press). For his contributions to the fields of history and social justice, Trotter was recognized by the American Historical Association with its Award for Scholarly Distinction and the John Lewis Award for History and Social Justice in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

Darwin Week lecture by Fred Smith, Ph.D.

On Thursday, Feb. 13, there will be a special lecture in honor of Darwin Week, given by Fred Smith, Ph.D. This event will be free and open to the public.
Fred Smith is a paleoanthropologist who has studied Neandertals, other archaic people and the origins of modern humans for more than 50 years. Trained in zoology, anthropology and German as an undergraduate at the University of Tennessee, he received his Ph.D. in biological anthropology from the University of Michigan in 1976. Recently he retired as University Professor of Anthropology and Biological Sciences Emeritus at Illinois State University and an Adjunct Professor of Anthropology at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Applied Physics Experience for high school students

The Citadel’s Department of Physics will host an Applied Physics Experience for high school students on Saturday, Feb. 15.
The event offers students the opportunity to have fun learning about applied physics, collaborate with Citadel faculty and cadets, make engaging devices, learn how they work and also learn more about the cadet experience from physics majors.
Recent event projects include discovering the physics of string shooters, biologically inspired light seeking robots, microphone sensor system, sound activated LEDs, DIY metal detector and mechanical laser light show.
The registration fee is $35, and it covers all supplies, snacks and lunch.

The Engineers Week Banquet, hosted by the Charleston Engineers Joint Council will take place on Feb. 18 in the Buyer Auditorium located on The Citadel’s campus.
The Charleston Engineers Joint Council (CEJC) is a 501(c)(6) non-profit organization committed to promoting scientific and educational initiatives. With a focus on inspiring youth, advocating for STEM programs and fostering collaboration among professional societies, local industries, and educational institutions, CEJC plays a vital role in strengthening the engineering community.
The event will include raffles, recognition through awards and an inspiring keynote address by Dr. Tonya M. Matthews, President and CEO of the International African American Museum (IAAM) in Charleston, South Carolina.

After a successful 2024 competition, MATHCOUNTS Competition for Lowcountry Middle School Students will be returning to The Citadel campus on Friday, Feb. 28, inside the Buyer Auditorium, located inside Mark Clark Hall, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
MATHCOUNTS is a non-profit organization that provides engaging math programs to U.S. middle school students of all ability levels to build confidence and improve attitudes about math and problem-solving.
