The Citadel prepares for Recognition Day and Corps Day

At The Citadel, the fourth-class system lays the foundation for military training and cadet life, shaping each new class from the moment they arrive. For the Class of 2029, that transformation began August 16, on Matriculation Day, when they moved into their barracks and began the demanding process of becoming cadets.

On Friday, March 20, the class will mark a major milestone, shedding the title of “knobs” and stepping into their next phase as emerging leaders. As sophomores next year, they will help guide and train those who follow in their footsteps.

Their final requirement before fully entering the South Carolina Corps of Cadets is the Gauntlet — an intense physical and mental trial that serves as the capstone of knob year. The challenge reflects the resilience, discipline and unity forged through months of shared adversity.

On Saturday, March 21, the Class of 2029 will step off for the historic March to Marion Square, a tradition that bridges the Corps’ past and present. Gathering at the site of The Citadel’s original campus, cadets will renew their oath, recommitting themselves to the standards and responsibilities of the Corps. The college moved to its present campus along the Ashley River in 1922.

Recognition Day coincides with Corps Day — the annual celebration of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets and one of the most anticipated weekends at The Citadel. This year commemorates 183 years since the Corps was established.

Corps Day events include:

  • Open barracks and pipe band performances, 8:30 – 10 a.m.
  • The Citadel Rifle Legion performance, 9 – 9:10 a.m.
  • Summerall Guards performance, 9:15 – 9:45 a.m.
  • Jeep review parade and Palmetto Medals presentation, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.
  • March to Marion Square, 2:30 p.m.
  • Class of 2029 oath renewal, 3 p.m.

The Moore Art Gallery will also be open on Friday, March 20, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday, March 21, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. The art gallery is located on the first floor of Capers Hall near the American Atrium.
