The Citadel launches AI Action Speaker Series

In response to the President’s AI Action Plan, which calls for senior military colleges to focus on artificial intelligence research, development and workforce preparation, The Citadel is launching a series of panels, workshops and lectures to discuss AI across academic and leadership programs.

The Citadel’s mission is to educate principled leaders for all walks of life, and the college’s focus on AI helps equip cadets and faculty with essential skills in its development, ethical use and infrastructure.

“We in the School of Engineering are excited to partner with the Provost’s Office to launch this important campus resource, which brings nationally recognized voices in artificial intelligence to The Citadel,” said Andrew Williams, Ph.D., dean of the School of Engineering. “This initiative reflects the college’s commitment to preparing principled leaders who can ethically and effectively navigate the evolving AI landscape before and after graduation. By engaging with experts across academia, industry and government, our cadets and faculty have the opportunity to gain critical insights that will help shape responsible innovation in both military and civilian sectors.”

Events are open to The Citadel community; workshops will be open to faculty and employees while the panels and lectures will be available to cadets and students.

The first event of the series — a lecture focused on integrating AI into teaching, featuring two Citadel professors — will be held from 12:15 – 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 23, in the Riverview Room in Coward Hall. This lecture will focus specifically on AI integration in project management courses and will highlight practical applications and innovative strategies for future educators. Two additional events are scheduled for October. The first — beginning at 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 6, in Bastin Hall — is an invite-only industry panel featuring speakers from BMW Manufacturing, NIWC and Scientific Research Corporation. Later that month, The Citadel will host both a workshop and a lecture on Friday, Oct. 17; the workshop will be held from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. while the lecture will be from 12:15 – 1:15 p.m. Both events will be in Buyer Auditorium in Mark Clark Hall.

Additional events are planned for the fall 2025 and spring 2026 semesters; details are forthcoming.

These efforts position The Citadel to play a leading role in preparing future military and civilian leaders to responsibly leverage AI in service to our nation.
