
For the 2nd consecutive year, The Citadel has been named Best Regional University in the South by U.S. News & World Report out of more than 100 other public and private institutions across 12 states.
This builds on years of success for the Military College of South Carolina, as this is also the 15th year in a row that The Citadel has also been named Best Public University in the South.
“At The Citadel, our mission is to educate and develop principled leaders for all walks of life, and recognition as the Best Regional University in the South for the second consecutive year affirms our excellence in academics and leadership,” said The Citadel President Gen. Glenn Walters, USMC (Ret.), ’79. “These accolades reflect the discipline, commitment and camaraderie making our institution unique, and they are a direct result of the dedication demonstrated by our cadets, students, faculty, staff, alumni and supporters.”

- #14 (tied) Best Undergraduate Engineering, nationwide (non-doctoral)
- #174 (tied) Best Undergraduate Business, nationwide
- #229 (tied) Best Undergraduate Computer Science, nationwide
“These top rankings once again highlight the quality and distinction of an education from The Citadel,” said Sally Selden, Ph.D., SPHR, provost of The Citadel. “It’s a testament to the fact that we deliver more than academic instruction here; we cultivate leadership, character and purpose, and that sets our graduates apart. I am so proud of the continued acknowledgement from U.S. News & World Report, but I’m even more proud of the principled leaders who graduate from The Citadel ready to serve and make a difference.”
Additionally, this year marks the eighth year in a row that U.S. News & World Report has named The Citadel as the Best College for Veterans in the South. Veterans are welcome to attend any of the programs offered by The Citadel, including both the day and evening undergraduate programs as well as the master’s programs. While they may take classes alongside cadets, they are not required to wear uniforms or live in the barracks.

Many of The Citadel’s individual academic programs received national recognition. The Citadel’s School of Engineering tied for 14th place this year, and it consistently ranks as one of the top 25 undergraduate programs in the country out of institutions offering up to a master’s degree. In addition, The Citadel’s business and computer science programs also earned a high placement on the national level.
U.S. News & World Report was one of the first American publishers to produce a college rankings list based on a complex formula of publicly reported data that is submitted to the U.S. Department of Education annually by all institutions of higher education.
