This is a statement from The Citadel related to concerns expressed on social media:
The college provided two statements earlier this year in response to media requests related to the tragic February 14 incident during which a vehicle driven by a man who was a cadet at the time, Anthony Trioani, struck and killed a young woman. Trioani was arrested and charged with a felony Driving Under the Influence charge.
The statements are cited below, with the dates when they were provided. As you will see, the college confirmed that he was a student in February. Later, in May, when receiving additional requests, his status had changed, and that was also provided.
Feb. 15 – In response to your query I can confirm that Anthony Troiani is a cadet at The Citadel. The Citadel is saddened to learn of the collision on Sunday that resulted in the death of a person in our Charleston community. We send our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the person who perished in this unfortunate incident which is under investigation.
An example of this is below, as reported by WCSC-TV on Feb. 15, 2021:
“The Citadel has confirmed that Anthony Troiani is a cadet at The Citadel. They released a statement which said, ‘The Citadel is saddened to learn of the collision on Sunday that resulted in the death of a person in our Charleston community. We send our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the person who perished in this unfortunate incident which is under investigation.’”
The second simple statement was provided to media making requests about the updated status of Anthony Troiani, May 10 – 12: “He is no longer a student here. He graduated.”
As this case is adjudicated and Anthony Troiani is tried in court, the college, like all educational institutions, is obligated to follow the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, known as FERPA. The college’s policy on student records outlines the college’s procedures to comply with requirements of FERPA at this link.
