The Citadel’s Tommy and Victoria Baker School of Business (BSB) continues to lead in online business education.

U.S. News & World Report recently ranked the BSB’s online Bachelor in Business Administration program as #8 in the nation, advancing from last year’s ranking of #26.

“Each year, the impact of the hard work of our faculty, staff, cadets and students is shown through our consistently high rankings from U.S. News & World Report,” said Provost Sally Selden, Ph.D., SPHR. “The Baker School of Business’s rankings are proof that The Citadel’s approach to developing and supporting principled business leaders is valued.”

“Thanks to our relevant and engaging courses, taught by faculty with industry experience and academic credentials meeting strict AACSB accreditation standards, it’s no surprise that we’ve seen positive outcomes for graduates from the Baker School of Business,” said Michael Weeks, Ph.D., dean of the BSB. “In addition to successes of our undergraduates, our MBA program has a proven track record of success and recognition in the rankings, which has resulted in record enrollments.”

Both undergraduate and graduate online programs offered through the BSB are designed to help students pursue their specific interests, while allowing a flexible learning experience students can experience while employed.

“The programs offered by the Baker School of Business help students develop critical thinking skills that are applicable to today’s job market, while also giving students the flexibility and opportunity to earn a business degree from a highly ranked school,” said Todd Drew, Ed.D., director of MBA and College Transfer Programs for the BSB. “Our Business Administration Degree Completion program welcomes any student who’s earned a minimum of 30 college-level, transferable credit hours.”

The BSB is accredited by AACSB International, an organization that evaluates the best business schools in the world.

Gold stars are awarded to cadets and students who have earned a grade point ratio of 3.7 or higher.

Those cadets were recognized at the awards parade on Jan. 27, where they were presented their gold stars, which they may wear on their uniforms throughout the semester following their academic achievement. A gold star recognition certificate is awarded to non-cadet students who meet the requirements; veteran and active duty students are also awarded challenge coins.

Academics at The Citadel are divided between five schools: the Tommy and Victoria Baker School of Business, the School of Engineering, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Swain Family School of Science and Mathematics and the Zucker Family School of Education. McDougal-Rigney gift establishes scholarship and endowed professorship in honor of Citadel graduate and internationally best-selling “Wheel of Time” author https://today.citadel.edu/mcdougal-rigney-gift-establishes-scholarship-and-endowed-professorship-in-honor-of-citadel-graduate-and-internationally-best-selling-wheel-of-time-author/ Tue, 24 Jan 2023 15:15:38 +0000 https://today.citadel.edu/?p=34019 WheelofTimeWheelofTimeJames Rigney, perhaps better known by his pen name Robert Jordan, will be memorialized at The Citadel with an endowed professorship and scholarship in his name.]]> WheelofTimeWheelofTime

James Rigney, perhaps better known by his pen name Robert Jordan, will be memorialized at The Citadel with an endowed professorship and scholarship in his name. His widow and former editor, Harriet McDougal-Rigney, has generously provided the gift in his honor — creating the endowed James O. Rigney Jr., ’74, Professorship in Electrical Engineering and the James O. Rigney Jr., ’74, Electrical Engineering Scholarship.

In 2022, McDougal-Rigney began working with The Citadel Foundation to establish two significant endowed gifts, worth a combined one million dollars, to The Citadel School of Engineering to create the endowed chair and scholarship, which will provide a substantial benefit to the college’s electrical engineering department. This gift will also help meet two objectives that are part of the college’s strategic plan, Our Mighty Citadel 2026.

“This gift is transformational to the department. The work of electrical and computer engineers impacts every aspect of modern society, and the need for principled, highly qualified graduates has never been higher,” said Mark McKinney, Ph.D., professor and head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. “Mrs. Rigney’s generous gift will help The Citadel attract and retain top faculty and students to help us meet this demand.”

The James O. Rigney Jr., ’74, Electrical Engineering Scholarship will help the college recruit and retain high-caliber engineering cadets and students by providing merit-based financial resources, with preference given to electrical engineering majors from the Lowcountry.

The recipient of the endowed James O. Rigney Jr., ’74, Professorship in Electrical Engineering will be a pivotal faculty appointment providing an additional source of funding to support the professor’s work and research in the field.

Rigney graduated from The Citadel as a veteran student in 1974 with a degree in physics after serving in Vietnam. His writing career began in 1977, with his first book in the renowned “Wheel of Time” series being published in 1990. Rigney’s ties with The Citadel continued, and the college awarded him an honorary doctorate of literature in 1999. His presence is still seen on campus — books from “The Wheel of Time” series are housed among the collections of the Daniel Library’s Rare Books Room, and books and memorabilia celebrating Rigney’s literary career are on public display in the library. Michael Livingston, Ph.D., an English professor at The Citadel and author of the recently published “Origins of The Wheel of Time,” a companion volume to Rigney’s bestselling series, was given Rigney’s old writing desk and chair, as well as some other personal items that can be seen in his office.

“My husband was immensely proud of the engineering education he received at The Citadel,” said McDougal-Rigney. These generous gifts offered in her husband’s memory will improve access and affordability for cadets and students interested in attending The Citadel, as well as help the college continue to retain and compensate talented faculty and staff.

The Citadel School of Engineering is ranked as one of the Top 25 Undergraduate Engineering programs and is one of the first five engineering programs established in the country.

Since it was founded in 1842, veterans have been an integral part of the Military College of South Carolina. Veteran students at The Citadel have the opportunity to earn their degrees through the day program, evening program and graduate college.

Now, to boost the veteran services already provided by the college, the Veteran Student Success Center is one of 14 recipients of a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

This grant, for more than $600,000, is designed to support veteran student success and formally establishes The Citadel as one of the federal government’s Centers of Excellence for Veteran Student Success, along with creating a sustainable model for these types of support services across the nation.

“This grant is a fantastic opportunity for the Veteran Student Success Center to continue and expand the great work they are doing for our veteran students,” said The Citadel President Gen. Glenn Walters, USMC (Ret.), ’79. “For the last five years in a row, The Citadel has been named the best college in the south for veterans. This grant will help us build even more on our previous successes and provide more benefits to those veterans who choose to study at The Citadel.”

The Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success grant will expand the institution’s efforts to support veteran students by increasing student services and expanding the VSSC’s staff. A portion of the grant will go towards creating a leadership team – comprised of an academic coach, career coach and resiliency coach – which will provide a support team to each veteran student to ensure they succeed during their time at The Citadel.

The Citadel first admitted veterans as students in 1945, and there are currently more than 250 veterans currently studying at The Citadel as either undergraduate or graduate students.

“It’s an honor to help veteran and military-connected students at The Citadel,” said Sally Levitt, director of the VSSC. “Being able to establish these new services for them – such as an academic support team similar to those available to cadets, as well as orientation and transition programs – is what makes this all worth it. I’m so proud of our veteran and active-duty students, and we’re all so thankful for the opportunities this grant will provide.”

The Veteran Student Success Center will use part of the grant to focus on increasing veteran student enrollment and retention through academic, career and financial support services. To implement this, the VSSC will establish an orientation and transition program to enhance veteran students’ onboarding process by ensuring each student is aware of the available support services. This program will also help veteran students have a smooth transition from military life into academic life. Along with this program, the center will be able to provide a multitude of resources to veteran students such as tutoring, academic skill-building instruction, academic advising, educational planning, career services, professional development and personal counseling.

To foster a sense of belonging among veteran students, the grant will help expand veteran student group events and provide networking opportunities. To further the veteran-friendly culture on campus, faculty and staff will be provided professional development opportunities on best practices in working with veteran students. Another portion of this grant will go towards establishing a mentorship program that will help veteran students partner with local businesses and other former service members.

An instrumental person in making this grant possible was Tara Hornor, Ph.D., professor in the Zucker Family School of Education.

“This grant will provide a multitude of opportunities for the Center. Being recognized on a federal level like this will bring so many new benefits for our veteran students here at The Citadel, and I look forward to seeing the VSSC serve as a sustainable national model for supporting veteran student success,” said Hornor.

This grant will support the college’s mission, core values and the Our Mighty Citadel 2026 strategic plan that aims to enhance and enrich recruitment of and student support services for veteran students. Those wishing to support veteran students and the VSSC can do so through The Citadel Foundation by clicking here.

U.S. News & World Report has named The Citadel #1 Best College for Veterans in the South for five consecutive years.

Drayton Named Head Football Coach https://today.citadel.edu/drayton-named-head-football-coach/ Wed, 14 Dec 2022 19:28:38 +0000 https://today.citadel.edu/?p=33932 Maurice DraytonMaurice DraytonFormer Bulldog player and defensive coordinator Maurice Drayton has been named the next head football coach at The Citadel.]]> Maurice DraytonMaurice Drayton

From The Citadel Athletics

Former Bulldog player and defensive coordinator Maurice Drayton has been named the next head football coach at The Citadel. The announcement was made by Director of Athletics Mike Capaccio on Tuesday.

“We are very excited to have Maurice back at The Citadel,” said Capaccio. “We conducted a very thorough search and it was clear that Maurice was the best person for this position. He understands what it takes to be a cadet-athlete at The Citadel, and also understands what it takes to be successful on the field.”

A former standout player and defensive coordinator, Drayton returns to The Citadel after spending the previous seven seasons working in the NFL. He most recently served as the assistant special teams coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders. Drayton also served as the special teams coordinator in Green Bay in 2021, assistant special teams coordinator for the Packers from 2018-20, and the special teams coordinator for Indianapolis Colts in 2016-17.

In his final season in Green Bay, Drayton worked with newcomer P Corey Bojorquez, who finished with the highest gross punting average (46.5 avg.) in a season (min. 35 punts) in franchise history. He also saw K Mason Crosby set a new franchise record with a streak of 24 consecutive field goals made from 2019-2021.

Drayton’s first season with the Colts saw him guide Pat McAfee to his second Pro Bowl after leading the league with a 49.3 yard average. Additionally, he helped Adam Vinatieri register his 19th and 20th 100-point seasons, extending his NFL record.

“I want to thank Gen. Walters, Mike Capaccio and the entire committee for giving me this opportunity. I made the decision several years ago to take the road less traveled, and it allowed me to meet people that have remained loyal.

“I believe in the divine power of God and that has moved in the minds of those who extended the invitation to return home. For me and my family, Moncks Corner, Charleston and The Citadel will always be home. I am prepared to assist in taking our school to the next level.”

Drayton served as The Citadel’s defensive coordinator from 2014-15, helping the Bulldogs to the 2015 Southern Conference Championship. The 2015 defense led the conference with 31 takeaways, 11 fumble recoveries, 10 passing TDs allowed and a 36.5 opponent third-down conversion percentage. The defense also ranked third in the FCS with 20 interceptions, including five returned for touchdowns.

All-in-all, Drayton has spent 14 seasons at The Citadel as a player or coach. He earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1998 and his master’s in education in 2007.

As a player, Drayton was a two-year starter at cornerback and finished his career with 145 tackles, 17 pass break-ups and three interceptions.

After completing his eligibility in 1998, Drayton spent the next seven seasons as a member of the Bulldog coaching staff. He began as a graduate assistant/secondary coach, before spending the 2000 season coaching the tackles/tight ends. He also worked with the wide receivers (2001) and outside linebackers (2002), before spending the 2003-05 seasons coaching the secondary, special teams and serving as the recruiting coordinator.

Drayton spent the 2006 season as the defensive coordinator for the Seinajoki (Finland) Crocodiles of the European Football League. He spent 2007 as an assistant principal and assistant coach at Goose Creek High School.

Drayton joined the staff at South Carolina State in 2008, coaching the defensive backs and special teams. In his two seasons in Orangeburg, Drayton helped SCSU capture a pair of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) titles.

Drayton spent the 2010-11 seasons as the assistant head coach, special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach at Coastal Carolina.

He would serve as the secondary coach for former Bulldog head coach Ellis Johnson at Southern Miss in 2012 before working with the defense and special teams with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League in 2013.

A native of Moncks Corner, South Carolina, Drayton and his wife are the proud parents of two children.

Robert Pickering, a member of The Citadel Class of 1994, has been promoted to Chief Inclusive Excellence Officer.

In this position, Pickering will lead, develop and enhance a culture of diversity and inclusion at The Citadel, in support of the college’s mission, core values and the Our Mighty Citadel 2026 strategic plan.

“As the Chief Inclusive Excellence Officer, my goal is to advance and support The Citadel’s mission of developing principled leaders in all walks of life,” said Pickering. “Whether its cadets, faculty, or staff, continuing to provide a professional environment for all members of The Citadel family – regardless of their backgrounds or beliefs – is critical to the college’s core values of honor, duty and respect.”

Pickering replaces Dr. Shawn Edwards, who was the first person to serve as Chief Inclusive Excellence Officer for The Citadel.

Prior to this role, Pickering was the director for Multicultural Student Services. He has served in a variety of roles since joining the college as an employee in 1995, including admissions counselor, associate director of admissions focused on recruiting minority and underrepresented students, director of the Student Success Center, director of The Citadel Success Institute and an ombudsman.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue this mission. We have made, and continue to make, significant progress when it comes to ensuring The Citadel is a place where everyone is welcomed,” Pickering continued.

Pickering’s experiences at The Citadel have shaped his perspective in many ways. As a cadet, he was part of the African American Society and served as their president his senior year.

“I know firsthand what it was like as an underrepresented student 30 years ago – I started my knob year in 1990. For others like me who are in an underrepresented population, I can say The Citadel’s efforts to create an open campus, one where differences are appreciated and respected, reflects the college’s commitment to our core values,” said Pickering. “I want to continue making The Citadel a better place for all cadets, students, faculty and staff.”

Pickering, a Charleston native and Burke High School alum, graduated from The Citadel in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. In addition to the African American Society, Pickering was part of the Accounting Club and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He also earned his Master of Arts in Social Science from The Citadel in 2007.

“It was said Chris never met a stranger, and if you made a connection with him, it was forever.”

On Veterans Day 2022, The Citadel officially welcomed a national hero into the Long Gray Line of alumni.

The Military College of South Carolina presented a posthumous degree and class ring to the family of Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Celiz, a member of the Class of 2008.

Celiz, a native of Summerville, South Carolina, attended The Citadel from 2004-2006, leaving the college in good standing to join the Army in 2007.

Sgt. Christopher Andrew Celiz
Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Celiz

“Chris was the guy who made everyone part of the team,” said The Citadel President Gen. Glenn Walters, USMC (Ret.), ’79, during the presentation. “His classmates wondered if he slept. All Citadel alumni knew ‘go-to’ guys in their company they could always count on — Chris was one of these in spades. He and his family took out-of-town cadets under their wing and made them feel like they were home. He was, by all accounts, everything you wanted in a comrade and classmate.”

Celiz was selected to serve with the 75th Ranger Regiment as a combat engineer in 2013. At the time of his death, Celiz was serving as the battalion mortar platoon sergeant and was in the process of reclassifying to the infantry branch. He was killed during combat operations in Afghanistan on July 12, 2018, making the ultimate sacrifice to guarantee the safety of those around him.

For his heroism and selflessness, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 2021. His name was also added to The Citadel War Memorial in 2018, along with the other Citadel alumni who were killed in action before him.

This is the second posthumous degree to ever be presented by The Citadel. The first was presented in September of this year to the family of Lt. Col. George McMillan, USAAF, ’38, after a change in college policy allowed posthumous degrees to be presented to cadets and students who left the college in good standing.

As The Citadel celebrates its 100th year on the Ashley, it is also actively making improvements to prepare for the next 100 years.

One of those changes includes bringing in new cannons to be fired during dress parades.

The two cannons that have been on campus since the 1950s — affectionately known as “Betsy” and “Lizzie” — have been retired for mechanical reasons. Those two cannons have been moved closer to the Star of the West monument.

In their place are two M101 howitzers, which were previously fired during President Ronald Reagan’s inauguration.

The two new cannons are expected to fire 17 rounds during their Homecoming debut at the Jeep Review Parade on Saturday, Nov. 5. For a full list of homecoming events, click here.

The concrete pad where they stand will be expanded over winter furlough, allowing two additional M102 howitzers to join the new cannons next semester.

“The replacement of Lizzie and Betsy with two M101 salute guns and two additional M102 Howitzers in the spring is an event of historical significance at The Citadel,” said the Palmetto Battery TAC Officer Lt. Col. Glenn Remsen, SCSG. “It also marks another expansion of Palmetto Battery’s ceremonial support capabilities. Palmetto Battery was formerly known as Salute Gun Battery consisting of only 14 upper class cadets. Today, Palmetto Battery has 98 cadets representing all four classes.”

The four howitzers are on loan from the U.S. Army, coming to The Citadel directly from the Sierra Army Depot in Herlong, California.

Cadets with Palmetto Battery are in charge of the new howitzers, as well as the replica six-pound, black powder cannons which are fired during parades and football games.

Incoming cadets may apply to join Palmetto Battery prior to Matriculation. All new cadets receive training on the guns, as well as how to serve on a color guard.
